Sweat marks on coloured cotton.

A fabric-aware approach is available if the garment is washable and the care label permits these products. Our first move: Blot any moisture; check the garment’s care label before treating the mark.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Blot any moisture; check the garment’s care label before treating the mark.

Why coloured cotton changes the answer

Coloured cotton needs a dye-transfer check. Even a cleaner that removes a stain may lighten the garment, so start with a hidden seam test. Sweat, skin oils and deodorant can leave different marks.

A careful step-by-step approach

  1. 1

    Check the type of mark

If the area is yellowed or faded, some of the change may be dye alteration rather than removable residue.

  2. 2

    Pre-treat gently

Apply liquid laundry detergent or a fabric-safe prewash remover to the affected area, following the product label.

  3. 3

    Launder, then inspect

Wash using the garment’s care label and the cleaner’s instructions. Wash with similar colours. Do not use bleaching agents unless both the garment care label and cleaner label allow them. Check the mark before drying; repeat a compatible treatment if needed. Air-dry until it is gone.

What not to do

  • Do not tumble-dry or iron before checking that the stain is gone.
  • Do not mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia or other cleaning products.
  • Do not skip a hidden-area colourfastness test when using a cleaner.
Stop condition: Stop if the care label forbids wet cleaning, dye transfers, the fabric weakens, or the mark worsens.

What if it already dried?

If perspiration has changed the fabric dye itself, cleaning may not restore the colour. A dried stain can require different handling and may be less responsive to treatment. Our tool generates a separate plan that accounts for timing while preserving the same material safeguards.
