THE SHORT ANSWER
Blot up the excess with a clean white cloth. Do not rub.
Why coloured cotton changes the answer
Coloured cotton needs a dye-transfer check. Even a cleaner that removes a stain may lighten the garment, so start with a hidden seam test. Coffee can leave a coloured residue, especially after it dries.
A careful step-by-step approach
- 1
Cool-water treatment
If washable, flush the stain gently from the back with cool running water, or soak briefly in cool water if the label permits.
- 2
Pre-treat the mark
Apply a little liquid laundry detergent or a stain remover labelled for the fabric. Follow its directions and rinse thoroughly.
- 3
Launder, then inspect
Wash using the garment’s care label and the cleaner’s instructions. Wash with similar colours. Do not use bleaching agents unless both the garment care label and cleaner label allow them. Check the mark before drying; repeat a compatible treatment if needed. Air-dry until it is gone.
What not to do
- Do not tumble-dry or iron before checking that the stain is gone.
- Do not mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia or other cleaning products.
- Do not skip a hidden-area colourfastness test when using a cleaner.
What if it already dried?
Coffee with milk can also leave a fatty residue. A dried stain can require different handling and may be less responsive to treatment. Our tool generates a separate plan that accounts for timing while preserving the same material safeguards.
