How the plan is built
Every result uses three selections: the substance, the material, and whether the stain is fresh or dried. The tool applies material-specific guardrails before displaying treatment instructions, rather than recommending one mixture for every surface.
- Identify the mess. Water-based drinks, oils, pigments and dried solids require different first moves.
- Protect the material. Washable garments are treated differently from wool, silk, upholstery, carpet, leather and finished wood.
- Check the label. Instructions from the manufacturer, detergent label and cleaning code override any generic advice in the app.
- Flag uncertainty. If a sofa's code is unknown, or an item may be silk or a specialty rug, the tool stops before recommending wet cleaning.
Safety rules we don't bend
We do not recommend mixing cleaning products or using bleach, vinegar, alcohol or abrasives as a universal recipe. The CDC warns against mixing household cleaners, including products containing bleach. Treat a cleaning product as a chemical: follow its directions, keep it away from children and use appropriate ventilation.
Spot-test compatible treatments on concealed material first. Stop if dye transfers, fabric weakens, a finish changes, a water ring forms or the mark spreads. A stain may be permanent; an app cannot guarantee removal or identify your exact textile or finish.
What the tool can and cannot know
It can: suggest an initial physical action, condition further steps on the material, explain likely risks, provide links to source organizations, and create a shareable plan. It can also distinguish W, W/S, S and X upholstery care codes.
It cannot: inspect the actual label, confirm the exact chemical makeup of a stain, verify dye colourfastness, guarantee a result or replace a professional cleaner. Recommendations are not individual product tests, professional textile inspections or manufacturer's warranties.
