THE SHORT ANSWER
Let the mud dry before gently lifting the loose dirt.
Why denim changes the answer
Indigo-dyed denim can lose colour under forceful treatment. A gentle first move is more sensible than vigorous scrubbing. Wet mud spreads; it is often easier to lift once it has dried.
A careful step-by-step approach
- 1
Lift the dry soil
If the mud is still wet, allow it to dry. Gently brush or shake off loose debris. Do not grind grit into the fabric.
- 2
Pre-treat
On a washable, colourfast garment, work a little liquid laundry detergent into the mark as its label instructs. Rinse well.
- 3
Launder, then inspect
Wash using the garment’s care label and the cleaner’s instructions. Turn inside out for washing if the label permits, to help reduce visible fading. Check the mark before drying; repeat a compatible treatment if needed. Air-dry until it is gone.
What not to do
- Do not tumble-dry or iron before checking that the stain is gone.
- Do not mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia or other cleaning products.
- Do not skip a hidden-area colourfastness test when using a cleaner.
What if it already dried?
Brush dried mud gently without grinding grit into the fibres. A dried stain can require different handling and may be less responsive to treatment. Our tool generates a separate plan that accounts for timing while preserving the same material safeguards.
