THE SHORT ANSWER
Lift off the excess with a spoon or dull edge. Do not push it further in.
Why white cotton changes the answer
White cotton is usually launderable, but the care symbol still controls wash temperature and which products may be used. White fabric does not automatically tolerate chlorine bleach. Chocolate combines solids and oils: lift the excess before cleaning.
A careful step-by-step approach
- 1
Remove the solids
Gently lift away remaining food with a spoon. Avoid pressing pigment and oil further into the weave.
- 2
Rinse from the back
If washable, run cool water through the reverse of the stain, then apply liquid laundry detergent following its directions. Rinse well.
- 3
Launder, then inspect
Wash using the garment’s care label and the cleaner’s instructions. For persistent marks, a labelled colour-safe oxygen laundry product may be an option only if the garment care instructions permit it; never assume any bleach is safe. Check the mark before drying; repeat a compatible treatment if needed. Air-dry until it is gone.
What not to do
- Do not tumble-dry or iron before checking that the stain is gone.
- Do not mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia or other cleaning products.
- Do not skip a hidden-area colourfastness test when using a cleaner.
What if it already dried?
Avoid spreading melted chocolate by rubbing. A dried stain can require different handling and may be less responsive to treatment. Our tool generates a separate plan that accounts for timing while preserving the same material safeguards.
