Red wine on white cotton.

A fabric-aware approach is available if the garment is washable and the care label permits these products. Our first move: Blot up the excess with a clean white cloth. Do not rub.

THE SHORT ANSWER

START HERE

Blot up the excess with a clean white cloth. Do not rub.

Why white cotton changes the answer

White cotton is usually launderable, but the care symbol still controls wash temperature and which products may be used. White fabric does not automatically tolerate chlorine bleach. Red wine pigments can spread quickly through absorbent fibres.

A careful step-by-step approach

  1. 1

    Cool-water treatment

If washable, flush the stain gently from the back with cool running water, or soak briefly in cool water if the label permits.

  2. 2

    Pre-treat the mark

Apply a little liquid laundry detergent or a stain remover labelled for the fabric. Follow its directions and rinse thoroughly.

  3. 3

    Launder, then inspect

Wash using the garment’s care label and the cleaner’s instructions. For persistent marks, a labelled colour-safe oxygen laundry product may be an option only if the garment care instructions permit it; never assume any bleach is safe. Check the mark before drying; repeat a compatible treatment if needed. Air-dry until it is gone.

What not to do

  • Do not tumble-dry or iron before checking that the stain is gone.
  • Do not mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia or other cleaning products.
  • Do not skip a hidden-area colourfastness test when using a cleaner.
Stop condition: Stop if the care label forbids wet cleaning, dye transfers, the fabric weakens, or the mark worsens.

What if it already dried?

Salt, white wine and boiling water are not reliable universal fixes. A dried stain can require different handling and may be less responsive to treatment. Our tool generates a separate plan that accounts for timing while preserving the same material safeguards.
